Our volunteers are a vital part of the Dream Center. If it was not for them we would not be able to
reach the community like we do.
Here are some of their BCDC stories....
Carolyn Heinig heard about the Dream Center through her church. She began volunteering in 2012. At the BCDC, she works directly with clients in the Dream Pantry and enjoys helping them individually. This person-to-person connection is a big part of what keeps her volunteering. She also she loves the positive, upbeat people she volunteers with. The clients, staff and fellow volunteers appreciate her for all she does.
Nilda Maldonado has been volunteering at the Brazoria County Dream Center in the River of Hope program since 2008. When asked what keeps her here, Nelda says that she enjoys it and it blesses her. She goes out of her way to help everyone; clients, volunteers and staff. Her calm, peaceful spirit helps soothe all around her. Although she prefers to stay out of the spotlight, when BCDC has a volunteer such as her, we want to share the news. Thank you, Nilda for all you do.
Jacki Draper chooses to volunteer at the Dream Center because she wants to give back. As a young single mom, Jackie was once on the receiving end of assistance. She worked three jobs to support her family. At Christmas one year, she realized there just wasn't enough left over to give her sons gifts.
As Jacki was crying out to God, feeling such despair over the lack at Christmas, there was a knock at her door. She opened it to find a man standing on her porch. It was snowing. He was dressed for snow in snow boots and a parka. The snow was several inches deep. He handed her a box of clothes for her sons. Then he handed Jacki a box of toys. She turned to set the boxes down. When she turned back, there was no one there. There were no footprints in the snow. Even after many years, telling the story still brings tears to her eyes. Jacki believes that God heard her cries and sent an angel to fulfill her family's needs. She saw firsthand how God provides.
As a volunteer at the Dream Center, Jackie is an encouraging voice to someone facing a hard time, as someone once was for her. Thank you so much Jacki.
